MVCSD names former District Treasurer as new Assistant Superintendent for Business
The Mount Vernon City School District named Jose Formoso as its new Assistant Superintendent for Business during the Special Meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday July 9, 2024. Mr. Formoso brings over a decade of experience in finances to this role, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from SUNY Oneonta in 2003. In 2009, Mr. Formoso received a Master of Business Administration in Financial Management from Pace University.
Mr. Formoso is well-equipped for the new position. He has experience working in the MVCSD, having been named as its district treasurer in November 2023. Through this position, he assisted in the preparation of the District's $270 million budget and performed a multitude of treasury duties. This position has shown him the ins and outs of the MVCSD Business Office, and he has introduced useful tools to ensure the smooth administration of the District's finances.
Before he served as district treasurer, Mr. Formoso focused his career in the field of school business administration. From June 2019 to November 2023, Mr. Formoso served as the school business administrator for the Peekskill City School District where he worked with the $10.6 million capital project in areas of accounts payable, recordkeeping and preparing state forms. Before this, Mr. Formoso served in finance and personnel support for the Mount Pleasant Cottage School where he handled tuition billings and financial reporting for the district. He also has experience as the senior account clerk for the Peekskill City School District and assistant branch manager at M&T Bank.
Mr. Formoso received several certificates in school business administration to further develop his professional skills. In 2021 he earned certifications from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO), New York’s SBO Leadership Academy and the New York State Education Department’s School District Business Leader Program. In the same year, he also earned the School District Business Leader Certificate from the College of Saint Rose.
The 2025-2026 proposed budget for the Mount Vernon City School District will be presented by Assistant Superintendent for Business Jose Formoso at the Board of Education meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. This will be the first presentation of the proposed budget, and a budget hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The budget vote will take place on Tuesday, May 20.
Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith presented the second State of the District Address to staff at their monthly staff meeting on Wednesday. She provided updates to employees about the developments in the school reconfiguration process and what they can expect in the next few months.
This week, the Mount Vernon City School District celebrates all assistant principals who play a major role in making schools a beacon of learning and safety. From April 7 to 11, schools around the country are showing love and well-deserved praise for National Assistant Principal Week, highlighting the heavy impact these people have on schools.
Students in the Secondary Superintendent’s Advisory Council completed an exciting team-building activity on Wednesday, creating go-carts with everyday supplies and candy. The group who was crowned the winner, naming their cart “Alexzandria,” cheered as their vehicle began rolling past the other groups’.
Kamora Alston is a celebrated Mount Vernon High School senior whose hard work in academics and presence on campus has awarded her praise in her school community.
Mount Vernon High School barbering and cosmetology students visited the Doles Center to provide free haircuts to the over 30 people in the community on Wednesday. Their charitable visit, which also earned them class credit and valuable experience, was even featured on News 12!
